The research began by defining clear eligibility standards. Candidates were required to be below 40 years of age as of October 31, 2025, hold a significant leadership position such as Founder, Co-founder, CEO, Managing Director, or an equivalent executive role, and demonstrate sustained business leadership within South India.

Potential nominees were identified through ET Edge applications, startup ecosystems, industry associations, corporate disclosures, business intelligence databases, editorial recommendations, and verified public information, creating a broad and representative leadership pool.

Creating an Inclusive and Balanced Candidate Pool

Rather than concentrating on a few well-known sectors, CMI designed the research to reflect the diversity of South India's economy. Leaders were categorized across industries including information technology, healthcare, manufacturing, BFSI, consumer goods, infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy, and high-growth emerging businesses.

To ensure fair comparisons, companies were grouped according to their scale of operations, allowing startups, SMEs, and established enterprises to compete within similar business environments. The longlist also reflected representation from metropolitan cities as well as rapidly growing Tier-2 and Tier-3 business hubs, while maintaining strong emphasis on gender diversity.

Each profile was independently verified through publicly available records, statutory filings, company information, and other credible business sources to confirm leadership experience, business performance, and organizational credibility.

A Scoring Model Focused on Leadership Excellence

CMI's evaluation framework intentionally prioritized individual leadership over organizational size. More than half of the overall assessment focused on qualities such as strategic thinking, innovation, governance, measurable achievements, industry influence, leadership effectiveness, and long-term vision.

The remaining evaluation considered organizational indicators including financial growth, market expansion, strategic collaborations, operational excellence, customer impact, major initiatives, and industry recognition. This balanced approach enabled meaningful comparisons across companies of different sizes and sectors.

Independent Validation Strengthened the Final Selection

Following the analytical assessment, shortlisted candidates were reviewed by an independent jury comprising senior editorial representatives from The Economic Times, experienced business leaders, investors, and academic experts. Their evaluation, supported by comprehensive due diligence and final validation checks, ensured that every recognition reflected both research integrity and independent judgment.

Raising the Standard for Leadership Recognition

According to Mohit Shrivastava, the objective was to establish a recognition framework rooted in evidence rather than perception. By combining broad market research, structured eligibility criteria, sector-balanced benchmarking, weighted evaluation, and independent review, the methodology produced a diverse and credible group of leaders representing South India's evolving business landscape.
