RDRFR Mod: Lawman Roleplay in St. Denis
I’ve spent hundreds of hours in Red Dead Redemption 2 as an outlaw, but sometimes you want to be the one slapping the cuffs on. That’s where Red Dead Redemption First Response (RDRFR) comes in. This singleplayer mod lets you play as a sheriff, marshal, or St. Denis copper whenever you want, then seamlessly switch back to Arthur Morgan when you’re done. No new game required, just walk into any town’s sheriff office and use the ledger to go on duty.
The wardrobe inside lets you swap into a uniform—classic St. Denis cop, marshal duster, or just a vest with a star—and you can even cycle through randomized lawman models to really get into character. Going off duty turns you right back into Arthur. Simple.
Starting Small, Failing Hard
I decided to begin my law enforcement career in Tumbleweed, imagining myself as a fresh deputy. I grabbed a scruffy old coot of a character and strolled out to find a citizen reporting a stolen horse. Easy enough. Except that horse was impossibly skittish. No amount of calming, sneaking, or gentle calling worked. I spent an entire shift chasing that damn horse across the map before giving up and going off duty. Not a great first day.
Next shift brought a fugitive investigation. The mod adds a new interface: question citizens for clues, and the map shows search areas. After two tips, the suspect appears on the map. I found mine near the saloon, but he spotted me first and shot me dead. Respawned, recruited a partner, and tried again—this time a woman in the graveyard opened fire. I lassoed her, but my partner kept shooting and killed her before I could tie her up. So much for a clean arrest.
The City Works Better
Small towns are awkward in RDRFR. Citizens and partners are trigger-happy, horses glitch out, and there’s just not enough action. But St. Denis is a different story. Denser streets, more suspects, and better shootouts. I finally got a proper arrest: found a fugitive eating dinner in the saloon, approached with my gun drawn, frisked him, tied him up, and blew my police whistle for backup to haul him away. No bloodshed. Another chase through the city had me sprinting through crowds and shooting a suspect in the leg before cuffing him—pure Law & Order, Old West style.
Rough Edges Worth Knowing
RDRFR is still a mod, so expect quirks. Failing to frisk a jailed suspect means they’ll pull a knife. Some fugitives attack the second you get near. Your partner might kill a suspect you wanted to arrest. And that calming-horse bug made one entire shift pointless. But the emergent comedy is part of the charm—like when a citizen shoots your bounty before you can, or when you accidentally kill a suspect with a knife-punch.
If you want fresh roleplay in RDR2, give RDRFR a try in St. Denis. The smaller towns are hit or miss, but the city delivers satisfying lawman moments between the odd failures.
